Our oceans are the cradle of all life on earth – help us to understand and protect them
Understanding and preserving our oceans is vital for conserving biodiversity and fighting climate change.
The oceans control the world’s climate and provide a vital source of food for hundreds of millions of people. Despite this, we know more about the surface of the moon than many areas and activities in the oceans.
The Marine Solutions Fund supports critical marine research at UQ, across a diverse range of areas from coral to whales to aquaculture and more.
Your donation this Giving Day will support two world-leading marine research stations, Heron Island and Moreton Bay (Quandamooka), as well as fostering emerging scientists.
Every gift has impact
Associate Professor Ian Tibbetts from the UQ Centre for Marine Solutions (CMS) explained that gifts to the Marine Solutions Fund will have a significant impact for our students, giving them the skills they need to become champions of marine science in the future.
“The CMS supports research training for both undergraduate and postgraduate students at UQ. Funds received for CMS will ensure practical skills development for undergraduate students, particularly through the Marine Society,” said Professor Tibbetts
The difference you can make
$50 will support the travel of two students to the Moreton Bay Research Station as part of the SEQUEST project, where they will study the tiny invertebrates that underpin the entire ecosystem and are sentinels of climate change.
$100 will purchase a waterproof Pelican case for safely carrying scientific instruments while being used on boats or beaches.
$500 will support a workshop for marine researchers, bringing them together to design novel and powerful research projects aimed at tackling some of the great challenges facing the oceans.
$1,000 will purchase the cameras for a BRUV – Baited Remote Underwater Video device – a simple but powerful piece of equipment for conducting fish surveys.
$5,000 will purchase an underwater acoustic recording system for long-term deployment and recording of whales, dolphins, fish and noise pollution.
